Class Notes
Building Independence in Agility – This class will focus on independent obstacle performance and distance. It would be appropriate for any dog that can perform all obstacles (contacts will be at full height and 6 weaves poles can be slightly open). Handlers should know how to do a front and rear cross, but don’t need to be doing it with the dog they’ve enrolled in class.
Novice/Open Agility – Dogs must be at competitive level (able to do all obstacles and sequence).
Improving Handler Skills – 4 week workshop starting June 16. Dogs in class should be able to do upright weave poles and be at full height on all agility equipment. This class will work on rear crosses, front crosses, getting those contacts, and hitting the weave entrance. Instructor will give help and suggestions on how to make these skills work for their team.
Agility Proofing – Dogs in class should be confident on all agility equipment and able to handle 12 upright poles. The class will use proofing as a means to build confidence and focus for the dog running an agility course. Proofing exercises used will be dependent upon the dog.
CGC/TDI Class offered by Chris Danker CPDT and Barb Hollis – 5 weeks class starts on June 30. The Canine Good Citizenship class will be for handlers/dogs preparing to take the CGC test as well as those preparing for pet therapy certification. Dogs must know the basic cues of sit, down, stay, and come on lead in an environment with moderate distractions. Dogs must be friendly to people, and be able to exhibit self control around other dogs. No prongs, choke collars, or harsh corrections will be permitted. Positive reinforcement training techniques will be utilized throughout the 5-week course.
CGC/TDI Class offered by Diane Lavigne CPDT – 5 week class starts on June19th. This class will allow different training collars and be based more on a balanced approach to dog training.
Course Design and Analysis – The class will consider agility courses from the handler’s perspective. The objective is to provide both new and experienced handlers better insight into making the correct handling choices for their dogs. The class will cover typical course elements and patterns as well as handling maneuvers that agility handlers need to understand in order to analyze a course, select their handling options, and define their path. Actual sequences and courses will be designed and presented so that handlers can practice their analysis skills. The entry requirements are that the dog and handler must be 1) capable of performing all contact obstacles at full height and 12 weaves straight up, and 2) competing at any level in any agility venue.
Advanced Rally Practice Group – will consist of a run through on an AKC advanced/excellent or APDT level 2/3 course each week. Each participant (or team/group of participants, depending on the number enrolled), will be responsible for one weeks course, and will either design it, or choose from a course they already have, or from the book of AKC courses the club has. They will be in charge of set up, and be the lead “judge”. Participants should be comfortable with setting a course, and should also be able to perform the advanced and excellent exercises. APDT courses may also be used.
Introduction to Competition Obedience – This class is for the handler that has not be a CD title on any dog. The class is designed for the beginner handler. Dog should be able to sit, down, and have the beginning of a stay exercise on the sit and down. Dog should have a recall command.
Utility Prep Class – This class is for the handler and dog team that is getting ready for the Utility ring. Dogs need a basic understanding of all the exercises but the exercises do not need to be ring ready. Articles can still be on the board. Two exercises from Utility will be worked on each week. It is a class for people that need to build confidence in their dog on utility exercises. Sometimes class will be held outdoors.
Introduction to competition canine dog sports program obedience (novice) – St. Hubert's has adopted and sanctioned a new version of Competitive Obedience that allows handlers and their dogs to earn obedience titles in the Novice, Open, Utility and OTCH classes. The creation of this program comes as a result of feedback from exhibitors, instructors, judges and the general dog training public nationwide. Handlers are allowed to communicate with their dogs during their performance through praise and encouragement. Food rewards may be given at the completion of an exercise. Mixed breed dogs as well as purebreds are eligible to compete. For more information go to http://www.sthuberts.org/CDSP/default.asp
This class is intended for the inexperienced or experienced handler to become acquainted with CDSP competition obedience.
